Message for police officers who are not surprised by this

You don't have to stand for this. Don't allow the flaws of others to lead to the compromise of your personal morality. Any honest police officer deserves to work for a law-abiding police force. You could easily get sucked into being a party to criminal offences, relying on authorities not prosecuting them. That is not what you joined the police for.

You need to declare that enough is enough, work with other like-minded colleagues, and co-operate outside of official channels, which have proven to be inadequate. If anyone of rank tries to stop efforts to restore law-abiding policing, use the argument that in doing so, they have stopped acting as a police officer, so their rank is irrelevant.

I don't know enough about the practical details to be specific about how you do this, you will have to work this out. It has to be easy to be good, and hard to be bad. But here are some possibilities:

Ask for clear statements from your force about things which should be clear, like the need for a power of seizure in order to seize property, which everyone inside and outside of the police can access.
Do you have an anonymous system for reporting concerns?
Or maybe one which only generates a report if two or three people report the same concern, for things you are too scared to report without company?
How about listing the most common lapses, and asking everyone to pledge not to do them?
Have you actually been trained in how sticking your arm through the door to prevent it from being closed can make you a trespasser if you do not have a warrant and there is no statutory power of entry, and so make you a private citizen rather than a police officer, and potentially make you criminally liable for things you do, still thinking you are a police officer? If not, then you have not been trained to do your job properly. Demand better training for everyone.

Here's a final question. There must be so many police officers who are aware of this sort of thing. Why have none of them created a webpage like this one? Why do the people who are paid to enforce the law leave tasks like this to civilians like me?
